Tips to Reduce Fuel Cost

Small changes that make a big difference to your monthly fuel bill
🌬️
Maintain Correct Tyre Pressure
Under-inflated tyres increase rolling resistance and can reduce mileage by 3–5%. Check tyre pressure every 2 weeks. Refer to your bike's owner manual for the correct PSI.
⚙️
Regular Engine Servicing
A clean air filter and fresh engine oil can improve fuel efficiency by 5–10%. Stick to the manufacturer's service schedule — skipping services directly hurts your mileage.
🏎️
Ride in the Right RPM Band
For 125cc bikes, ride between 3,000–5,000 RPM for best efficiency. Avoid high-rev riding and sudden acceleration. Smooth throttle inputs significantly improve fuel economy.
Fill Fuel in the Morning
Fuel is denser at lower temperatures. Filling up in the morning or evening means you get slightly more fuel for the same price. Avoid filling during peak afternoon heat.
Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I calculate bike fuel cost per month?
Monthly fuel cost = (km per day × 30) ÷ mileage (km/l) × petrol price per litre. For example, if you ride 30 km/day, get 50 km/l mileage, and petrol costs ₹103/litre: (30×30)÷50×103 = ₹1,854/month.
What is the average mileage of bikes in India?
Most commuter bikes in India deliver 45–65 km/l real-world mileage. Premium and performance bikes typically deliver 25–40 km/l. Electric bikes have a running cost equivalent to roughly 150–200 km/litre.
How much does petrol cost per km for a bike?
At ₹103/litre and 50 km/l mileage, petrol costs ₹2.06 per km. Higher mileage bikes cost less per km — a 65 km/l bike costs just ₹1.58/km at the same price.
Why is my actual mileage lower than ARAI certified?
ARAI tests are done in controlled lab conditions — fixed speed, flat road, no traffic. Real-world mileage is lower due to traffic stops, hills, payload, tyre condition, and riding style. Typically 10–20% lower than ARAI figures.
Is electric really cheaper than petrol to run?
Yes — significantly. Charging an EV costs ₹1–2/km vs ₹1.5–4/km for petrol. Over 12 months at 30 km/day, an EV can save ₹8,000–₹14,000 on fuel alone. However, the higher upfront cost and battery replacement cost must also be factored in.
How does city traffic affect fuel cost?
Stop-and-go city traffic can reduce mileage by 20–30% vs highway riding. Our calculator uses your daily distance and mileage — if you ride mostly in heavy city traffic, use 10–15% lower mileage than your bike's claimed figure for a more accurate estimate.
How are petrol prices different across cities?
Petrol prices vary by state due to different VAT/state tax rates. Delhi has lower taxes (lower price), while Maharashtra, Rajasthan, and Telangana have higher state taxes (higher prices). Central excise duty is uniform across India.
