Bike RTO Transfer Cost — moving states
When you move from one state to another, you have ~12 months to re-register your bike with the new state's RTO. The bill includes a No-Objection Certificate (NOC) fee at your origin, the new state's road tax (paid fresh), and re-registration paperwork at the destination — minus a refund of the unused portion of your original road tax. Pick your states + the bike below for an estimate.
Process — what you actually do at the RTO
- Form 28 + NOC — visit your origin RTO, pay the NOC fee (~₹500), get a certificate that says "I have no objection to this bike being re-registered elsewhere."
- Pollution under control + insurance — both must be valid in the destination state.
- Move + re-register within 12 months — destination RTO accepts your old RC + NOC + Form 29/30 + your new state's address proof.
- Pay new road tax — the new state's full road tax becomes payable. This is by far the biggest line item.
- Apply for refund — back at your origin RTO, file the refund claim with your new state's RC. Takes 3-6 months typically.
Two things people miss
- The 12-month deadline is enforced. Past it, the destination RTO can fine you (₹2,000-₹10,000) and refuse to register without a court order.
- If your bike is on a loan, you also need an NOC from the financier — most banks charge ₹500-₹1,500 for it.
